My name is Mike Bridges and I'm an investor. Chances are that you haven't heard of me.

You see, I've never been comfortable in the spotlight and have purposely remained "underground" for the better part of my investing career.

I don't write books...

I don't want to be an "expert" on the news...

I don't go from city to city and conference room to conference room putting on a "dog and pony show" so I can sell a room full of people an over-priced and underperforming course that will leave them without the answers, methods and techniques they will need to implement it.

First and foremost, investing is what I love to do and I've been doing it since I was in my mid-twenties, and have been doing so for over 30 years.

But I wasn't always an investor...

I knew that I needed to supplement my income and I devoured every single "get rich quick" book or magazine that I could get my hands on.

More than that, I was one of those people in the audience of one free seminar after another, each promising riches and success beyond my wildest imagination. Yet, seminar after seminar led me down the promised road, only to abandon me at the proverbial curb.

Over and again, I desperately attended those investing seminars and, through sheer tenacity, I was able to piece together bits of valuable and crucial information in order to get started.

One particular book that I fell in love with was, "How to Wake Up the Financial Genius Inside You" by Mark O. Haroldsen. I still consider it to be one of the best real estate investing books I've ever read.

I was cramming my head with theories, ideas and goals, but I had yet to figure out a way to implement what I was learning.

"Out of desperation, I jumped right in to
either sink or swim!"

With bills piling up, four mouths to feed and an empty refrigerator, I followed Mark's advice and made an offer on a four unit apartment building in Tampa, Florida. I offered just around $20,000 for the property and asked the seller to finance it 100%. Much to my surprise, he agreed to do the deal!

I quickly moved my family into one of the apartments and set out to fix up the other three and rent those out.

I had implemented what I'd learned and I saw immediate positive results. I was hardly swimming, but I wasn't sinking either.

About six months after I'd bought that building, I began to have problems with the tenant in the neighboring building. Truth be told, she was probably one of the worst neighbors I've ever had. They lived in filth and her son was a bully to my son.

One night around midnight I was just heading to bed when I heard this extremely loud moaning and screeching, the likes of which I'd never heard. Worse yet, it sounded like it was coming from my building. This was a bit alarming considering my family and the old lady below me were the only people in the complex.

When I went downstairs to investigate, I saw a tape recorder (remember this was 1976) laying just inside the front door and it was blaring out those awful noises. I heard the scampering of mischievous feet and saw the neighbor's kid bolt into the other building, laughing like a hyena the entire way. In case you're wondering what those sounds were, it was a recording of whales frolicking.

So the next day I called her landlord to give him a piece of my mind but hardly got past, "I'm calling about your tenant," before he launched a 10 minute rant about her and how she was the worst tenant he'd ever had. He went on about her running off his other tenants, the damage the kid has done to his building and how he couldn't get her out.

Without thinking, I blurted out, "So, do you want to sell the building?"

There was a few seconds of silence and then he said, "OK."

Again, without thinking I said, "I'll need you to finance it 100%."

A few more seconds passed and then he again said, "OK." Now my negotiation skills were hardly fine tuned at that point in my life but I was fueled by anger at this point.

"You'll need to pay all closing costs as well," I said.

Have you ever been so nervous that you would swear you could hear your heart beating? You know that feeling of your face being on fire and tunnel vision creeping in? That's what was happening to me at that moment. My mouth felt like it was full of saw dust and I was waiting for that owner to tell me what I could shove and where I could shove it.

He didn't, though. In fact, he simply stated, "OK. My son is an attorney and I'll have him draw up the papers."

"My life changed."

I bought that building with none of my own money using 100% seller financing. In less than 18 months, I sold both of those buildings and more than doubled my money, having made almost three times my yearly pay from the Air Force.

I had whet my appetite for allowing money to work for me instead of me working for my money.

By the way, the day I closed on the property I immediately paid my new tenant a visit and let her know that her rent was now double what she had been paying. After a few choice expletives from her, I told her that I was her new landlord. Amazingly enough, she and her son disappeared that night.

Through the years I've fine tuned my investing strategies and built upon those first investment opportunities. I've continued to grow my personal wealth and assets while enjoying the benefits of secured and steady returns.
